Abstract

This study examines the role of simulation-based value education in fostering empathy and prosocial behavior among elementary school students. Grounded in the need to bridge the gap between value understanding and real-life action, this research employs a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and questionnaires involving 30 fifth-grade students, two classroom teachers, and one school principal in Cimahi City, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis supported by method and source triangulation to ensure credibility and depth of interpretation. The findings revealed five major themes: (1) the development of affective empathy, reflected in students’ emotional sensitivity toward others; (2) the growth of cognitive empathy, indicated by students’ ability to understand different perspectives; (3) the transformation of empathy into prosocial behavior, such as helping and sharing; (4) strong emotional engagement during simulation activities; and (5) the sustainability of empathetic behavior in real-life contexts beyond the classroom. In addition, quantitative results demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ empathy levels, with the proportion of students in the high-empathy category increasing from 20% to 63%. These findings suggest that simulation-based learning provides meaningful experiential opportunities that effectively connect cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of value education. This study contributes a novel perspective by highlighting how structured simulation activities can facilitate the internalization and long-term application of prosocial values among elementary school students.
